Science and the Shroud of Turin

We are born to see God face to face. Most people see God after they die. Precious few see him while in the land of the living.

The deep fundamental purpose of modern science is to reveal God’s presence. We can infer that because modern science resulted exclusively from Christian Western Civilization.

Science is logos (little “l”) that results directly from Logos (capital “L”), which is the Word of God, Jesus.

Therefore, it is no coincidence that the authentic investigations into the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin are pyrotechnic displays of modern science.

  1. And these pyrotechnics have shown the Shroud is a fake.

    1. Ark, You need to update your ignorance. The studies you cite were proven phony years ago.

          1. LOL!

            First, that says nothing.

Second, it’s an Opinion piece lifted from a propoganda outlet started by the radical right-wing Heritage Foundation!

SoM, you just made baby Jesus cry.

            1. John, Of course it’s an opinion piece! The article is about the Shroud of Turin, after all.

But you asked for a citation concerning research on the Shroud. The notion that science has determined the Shroud was from the 12th century AD, or so, comes from research performed in Britain. The article I linked to gives some details as to who, what, when, where and why; and also about how the research institution kept secret data that debunked their published research findings.

Whether the Shroud is the one that wrapped Jesus during his resurrection is still not known.

            2. There’s no science in that fluff piece.

Now, seriously, stop making Jesus cry.

            3. John, The information is in the article. It took me about 5 seconds to skim until I found it.

I led you to the water. Drink if you will, or not.

  3. I for one dont need the Shroud to be authentic. Honestly, I think it’s probably a fraud from the middle ages. An “icon” meant to bolster the Faith of the believers… and possibly line the pockets of the RCC who held sway over most of what came to be known as the Dark Ages. “We have a more sure word of prophesy”. Don’t need Catholic idols or icons to focus our Faith on any more. Jesus is all we need. And His Word is sufficient and complete.

    1. Me, The Shroud of Turin isn’t about faith. It is about scientific curiosity concerning the greatest man who ever lived.

      1. There have been many people greater than Jesus. And if you limit your pool to those whose life has genuinely been seen to benefit mankind, as opposed to an almost entirely mythical being, then you’re in an entirely different ballpark.

        1. Someone, Jesus is the founder of Christianity, the world’s greatest religion. He also founded Christian Western Civilization, the greatest, most prosperous, most technically advance, most just civilization in human history.

Those two facts alone makes him the greatest man whoever lived.

          1. Christianity has become far too fractured to call it even a single religion, never mind the greatest. In any event, to those who deny the existence of gods which religion is best is a moot point. He didn’t actually ‘found’ Christianity. Indeed it’s so hard to establish what he really said and did in his short life, especially given that there are no eyewitnesses to bear testimony, that it’s clear that the actual founders based it on their own agendas.

            1. Someone, Your comment is irrelevant since it is obvious that Christianity and Christian Western Civilization became the greatest in their respective spheres.

            4. Agreed, and look how very quickly so many of them integrate and adopt western values? ( sarc)
And what do we have now, especially in Western Europe? Put up mosques, demand Sharia Law, open up Islamic faith schools.
              Stabbings, bombings, shootings.
The sooner the West puts it foot down over all religion, but especially Islam the better.
Look what Gert Wilders is doing.

            5. Ark, Adopting Western values is irrelevant to the fact that Western Civilization is the greatest civilization in human history.

  4. I was always fascinated by the shroud of Turin and I still am.
The shroud is one of the most examined objects in the world.
It was examined scientifically in 1977 by the Shroud Of Turin Research Project (STURP) with at the time state of the art science and technology.
Conclusion: The image was not produced with any known mechanism for artificially creating images or paintings.

The formation of the image is still a mystery. Despite all the claims to the contrary no one could replicate an image on a linen shroud with ALL the properties of the Turin shroud (chemical properties, 3D-Properties).

There are still idiots who claim that the shroud was proven to be a fake.
The carbon dating which yielded a medieval date for the shroud was shown to be highly problematic because the labs tasked with the dating violated their own protocol.
Instead of taking three different samples from three different places they took a sample from only ONE place and send three pieces from it to three different labs.

They chose the worst possible place for the sample because the place was different from the rest of the shroud (different optical properties) and therefore not represantative of the shroud.

Ray Rogers, a chemist of the STURP team, showed in a peer reviewed artcle that the dated sample was chemically different from the rest, containing cotton which was most likely used to repair the shroud at the place of the sample.

Aside from the violation of the protocol the carbon dating was done correctly (as far as I know) but if you date the wrong sample you will get a wrong date.
    Garbage in, garbage out.

The shroud is made of pure linnen. The cotton had to be added later.
